Product Description

The Nova S201 is an solar-powered portable lamp which provides lighting using the world's most efficient LEDs. It is being sold in over 20 countries around the world, providing better, brighter, safer, and more affordable light for families without reliable electricity.

The Nova can be charged with either a solar panel or an AC adapter. Both are included. When fully charged, the Nova will provide up to 32 hours of bright light. It is 8 - 10 times brighter than a kerosene lantern and 30 - 50% more efficient than fluorescent lights. The lamp gives an even white light that is projected at a wide angle - it is able to effectively illuminate a rural household with a room size of 4m x 4m.

Besides providing high-quality light, the Nova Mobile can also charge most models of mobile phones common in India and Africa. The Nova is not capable of charging more advanced models of phones (e.g. iPhone). Unfortunately, D.light cannot guarantee compatibility with your mobile phone at this time. Note: Mobile phone is not included.

The Nova comes encased in a sturdy housing unit that protects the interior from random dust, large insects and light water sprays. It comes with an ergonomically designed handle with a top strap to allow users to hang the Nova from hooks or poles to light up their work, study or living area. The Nova takes on a friendly rounded form with closely fitted component parts to create a rugged light, suited for everyday use. The Nova is designed in the USA and is patented.

Customer Reviews

Great product from a socially responsible company!5
This great little unit arrived fully charged, and I immediately plugged in my cell phone it it began charging it. I love it! Really nice bright light on it, it will be wonderful for emergencies, and I very pleased to support such a socially responsible company. It is cheap for what it does, and it helps support the company's research to make it available to less developed countries. Here's what TIME magazine had to say about d.light when they featured them as a Responsibility Pioneer: "It's a playful name for a serious company: D.light Design sells $10-to-$25 solar-powered lamps in more than a dozen countries where people lack electricity and often spend a lot on kerosene, which gives off noxious fumes. D.light's latest model also recharges phone batteries. But one of CEO Sam Goldman's goals is to find ways to lower the cost even further. "I'm not satisfied with $10," he says. "The real customers that we started this business for can't afford that."

Best Solar LED Lantern I've Found5
I've been looking for a reliable solar LED lantern that's bright enough to read by. Until finding this lantern, I relied on the Freeplay Indigo lantern, but it suffers from quality problems (I've owned 2 and they both broke, one beyond repair).

Fortunately, I found the Nova lantern and it's exactly what I was looking for. It's much brighter than the Freeplay Indigo. For example, the Nova's Low setting is about 2x brighter than the brightest Indigo setting. In fact, the brightest Indigo setting is only slightly (maybe 25%) brighter than the dimmest "Bed Light" setting on the Nova.

On its Low setting, you can read with the Nova about 1' away. On its High setting, you can read from 2', maybe even 3' away.

According to the brochure, the Nova's specs are:
Peak Lumen Output: 100L
Hours of Light on Full Charge: 12, 20, 40, 200 hours
Discharge/Overcharge: Protected
Solar Panel: 2W
Time to Charge (Solar): 10-12 hours
Time to Charge (AC): 5-7 hours
Voltage: 85-285V
Durability: 2 meter drop test
Battery: Replaceable 6V 1.3Ah SLA

Also, not mentioned in Amazon's description, the Nova includes 8 different phone tips to charge various cell phones.

Overall, I'm very happy with this lantern. In fact, I plan to buy more!

Solar charged-and it lasts a LONG time with LED lights5
Ideal for a camping weekend, backpacking or as an emergency light here in the USA, it goes a long time even on the highest setting before the rechargable battery ran down. We have used a demo version, and recharged it in the back yard just to get familiarity with it before taking it where we need it. On the low setting it has gone 5 days over night so far as a night light for our grandson, and still going strong. Meant for 3rd world countries where ac power is not available, it can serve here, too, with the low power draw LED and solar panel. The ac recharger is handy to get it fully charged before heading out on a trekking trip.
